Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive to begin

Largest food drive of the year provides more than 100,000 pounds annually

April 17, 2012 - Verona, Va. – On Saturday, May 12, letter carriers across the nation will be participating in the country’s largest, single-day food drive – Stamp Out Hunger. Sponsored by the National Association for Letter Carriers (NALC), this food drive will be taking place across the Blue Ridge region. Mail carriers will pick up non-perishable food donations left out by residents, as they deliver the mail along their daily route.

Stamp Out Hunger is the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s largest and most important food drive of the year, as it brings in a large supply of food – more than 100,000 pounds - just before the summer, when donations dramatically decrease.

The need for food assistance is great across our region. In the Blue Ridge area, more than 1 in 10 people don’t know where they will get their next meal, as the need for emergency food assistance has almost doubled in the past five years. More than 119,000 people each month are served by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community partners.

Volunteers are needed any time between 10am and 6pm in Waynesboro and Harrisonburg to sort food donations.  Call 540-213-8413 or email rswecker@brafb.org to sign up.
