Operation Angel Food

Hundreds of preschoolers enrolled in early childhood education programs, such as Head Start, do not benefit from after-school feeding programs because of their age. Operation Angel Food fills the gap by providing a nutritious take-home snack to at-risk children between the ages of three and five who are enrolled in school-sponsored early childhood education programs.

Operation Angel Food is a thriving collaboration between the Food Bank, the Virginia Preschool Initiative, Head Start and the local school systems. The Food Bank provides nutritious snacks for children to take home when they attend their preschool program.

The Food Bank piloted the Operation Angel Food in during the 2003-04 school year in the Central Shenandoah Valley and served 290 Head Start children. Today, this program nourishes more than 1,200 children across the Blue Ridge region.
