WHOLE FOODS' NICKELS FOR NONPROFITS: Now through Jan. 18
Help feed neighbors in need this holiday season while shopping at Whole Foods in Charlottesville. Customers will receive five cents for each reusable grocery bag they use, which they can either keep or donate to the Nickels for Nonprofits program, which benefits the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank through Jan. 18.
8TH ANNUAL VA HUNGER SYMPOSIUM: Oct. 21 to Oct. 26
Blue Ridge Community College will host events and activities that educate and promote awareness of food insecurity. This year’s eighth symposium will feature six days of education and engagement surrounding the issue of hunger. Some flagship events of the week include an Empty Bowl Dinner to raise money for the Food Bank, a screening of the new documentary “Hunger in America” and the play “The Last Five Years.” Get the full schedule here.
SCOUTING FOR FOOD: Oct. 25, Shenandoah Valley & Charlottesville; Nov. 8 - Winchester
Area Boy Scouts will be scavenging neighborhoods for food donations during our largest annual fall food drive. The food provided through this collection gives us a much-needed boost as we head into the busy winter months. Leave a bag of food at your doorstep and your local Scouts will do the rest!
HOMEBREW FOR HUNGER: 1-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26
Come and sample a variety of local beers and learn about the art of beer brewing at the second Charlottesville Homebrew for Hunger at Fifth Season Gardening. Homebrew for Hunger is the premiere festival to showcase local beer made by homebrewers and craft breweries, bringing professional and novice brewers together under one roof. Look for bigger and better things this year; more homebrewers and more money raised to fight hunger. Media Members of the Virginia Association of Broadcasters (VAB) will support their local food banks through PSAs, spreading the word about hunger in their communities, as well as providing easy ways for their audience members to donate directly to the food bank serving their area. In addition, the VAB will be seeking corporate partners to join in the fight against hunger. This campaign will run through summer 2015.
AUGUSTA EXPO MONTHLY MARKET AND YARD SALE
While hosting this monthly event, Augusta Expo is helping the hungry, too. The event occurs on the first Saturday of each month. Admission is $1 or non-perishable food donations for the Food Bank.
