National Hunger Statistics

Although related, food insecurity and poverty are not the same. Poverty in the United States is only one of many factors associated with food insecurity. Higher unemployment, lower household assets, and certain demographic characteristics also lead to a lack of access to adequate, nutritious food. Here is a look at some national hunger statistics:

  • 43% of households served have children under 18 years old
  • 11% of the members of households are children age 0 to 5 years
  • 43% of households include at least one employed adult
  • 6% are homeless
  • 74% have incomes below the federal poverty level
